LP ballonsWhere other art fairs can feel a little like Ikea (once you are in, you are in for at least an hour of a dizzying array of eye candy), The Loring Park Art Festival is a more like a little boutique. There is a lot of breakable grown up stuff, but their is also lot of room to move and plenty of places to jump off if you need to deal with a tantrum or just take a break.  The walkways are wide enough for a larger stroller; and, if one parent wants to stop and look at hand-blown glass, the other has plenty of space to wait outside the booth with Mr. Touchy & Ms. Feely without holding up traffic.

The food booths are scattered throughout the fair instead of gathered in one spot at the end.  For parents, this means you don’t have to power through the whole fair to take an ice cream break.  Plus there are plenty of beautiful places around Loring Park to stop and picnic and let the kids burn off some energy.  You could reasonably spend a not-too overwhelming afternoon strolling the park and taking breaks as needed.

Besides the artists booths, there are also strolling musicians and scheduled stage performances throughout the day.

This year Free First Saturday at the Walker doesn’t coincide with art fair weekend. I still recommend the stroll across the Whitney Bridge and maybe play a game of mini golf at the Walker (but expect a wait).

You can read my suggestions on getting to the art festivals and what to pack for a successful all-day outing here.

Together we run a small radio empire — SiaNet Radio — playing, promoting and enjoying the wide variety of local music and art in the Twin Cities. I juggle all this while writing about exploring the Twin Cities with kids. I couldn’t be happier.
