This 1974 classic which called a choreopoem, was conceived just two years before Penumbra Theatre was born. From its humble creation in 1974 to critical acclaim on Broadway, Ntozake Shange's Obie Award-winning choreopoem has excited, inspired and transformed audiences across the country. The literary luminary's fearless prose vividly paints intimate portraits of the pain and jubilation that women of color experience from girlhood throughout life. Shange was groundbreaking in her efforts to shatter the silence that protected abusers of women. "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf" is a brave reckoning, a celebration, a healing ceremony and, perhaps most profoundly, an example of the awesome power a chorus of women's voices can have. Watch dance, music and poetic monologues combine at St. Paul's Penumbra Theatre. [less-]

Explore rarely seen artifacts from The Bakken Museum's collections and experiment on the fringes of science! Follow the footsteps of innovators throughout history with interactive activities and presentations, and decide for yourself what is fact, fiction or somewhere in between. Objects on display will include the infamous Glass Armonica, as seen on Mysteries at the Museum. Invented by Benjamin Franklin and originally used to play "soft" Italian music," it eventually fell out of favor with its fans after its purported side effects were said to plunge listeners into a "dark and melancholy mood, that is an apt method for slow self-annihilation." Try your hand at the museum's own visitor-friendly version and see for yourself. Curator Adrian Fischer will be on hand delivering two timed presentations at 6:30pm and 7:30pm, focusing on objects such as the Glass Armonica, the history of Franz Mesmer and mesmerization, as well as sharing the more curious and sometimes creepy stories and artifacts from our collection! Evenings at The Bakken Museum is an excellent opportunity to experience the museum after hours, enjoy a cocktail or drink and experiment with STEM activities in a unique environment. This adult event is for guests 21 years of age and older. [less-]

At nearly six foot ten, with his wild hair and flowing beard, the Dutch pianist resembles a friendly giant from a book of children's fairy tales. But his playing -- understated, haunting, melancholic -- marks him out as the gentlest of giants, his delicate melodies soothing the soul in these troubled times. "The world is a hectic place right now," says Joep. "I feel a deep urge to reconnect on a basic human level with people in general. Music as our universal language has the power to unite. Regardless of our cultural differences I believe we have an innate understanding of what it means to be human. We have our goosebumps to show for it." Joep's music is the antidote to that hectic world of uncertainty and fear -- a soundtrack for a kinder, more hopeful future; a score for the unmade film of lives yet to come. "It's pretty emotional stuff," agrees Joep. "I call it 'simple music for complex emotions. It's music that enhances images, music that creates a space for the audience to fill in the gaps with their own imagination." He will be joined by a special guest for his concert at The Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. [less-]
