Visit a new Minnesota state park FREE

Did you know there are 9 Minnesota State Parks & State Recreation Areas within an hour’s drive of the Twin Cities? Admission is free for all this Saturday. Hit the link to explore – we’ve hit up all of them and recommend what not to miss in each with kids. Here are the state parks an easy drive from the Twin Cities Southeast Metro:

Afton State Park

6959 Peller Avenue S, Hastings, MN 55033
Afton State Park has bluffs, rolling prairie and a descent to a strip of a sandy swimming beach on the St Croix river. Of course, it won’t be swimming weather this weekend, but you can plan ahead for the summer. Afton State Park offers FREE equipment to borrow and explore with such as geocache units and birding, fish & kids discovery kits. Check at the state park visitor center. Frontenac State Park

29223 County 28 Boulevard, Frontenac, MN 55026
Perched high above the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin, Frontenac State Park has lovely, quiet views way out over the river valley. Our family has spent time here camping, picnicking and taking short hikes with the kids. It’s a definite stop on any day or weekend trip to Red Wing, Minnesota.

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park

9700 170th Street E, Nerstrand, MN 55053
It’s a small park, but that helps it feel very manageable with small children and we recommend it for a nice day trip from the Twin Cities. Pack a picnic and spend a couple of hours at the nature playground and hike the short park trail to find the Hidden Falls.
