Twin Cities Curfew Times for Minors

Twin Cities Curfew Times

As our kids get older, we start to navigate the tricky balancing act of giving them room to exercise independence while also keeping them safe and properly monitored. While ultimately only a parent can decide how to do this, we have some guidance with curfew times.

Bookmark this page for future reference. This information comes in particularly useful on certain holidays – like New Year’s Eve, Independence Day, the State Fair and Halloween.

Short Answers:

  1. Is there a curfew for minors in Minnesota? Yes. While the state has not set a specific time, most municipalities and counties have curfews. They tend to be similar throughout the state, but you’ll want to look at your own area, which we have listed below by county.
  2. What is the curfew for 16 and 17-year-olds in Minnesota? Again, you’ll want to check your own municipality, but older teens often have a later curfew, with midnight being the most frequent curfew time for 16 and 17 year old minors.
  3. What about park curfews? Note that if your kids are out in parks, the park may have a different closing time from the city curfew. We try to list those times in our individual park directory entries.

Minnesota State Fairgrounds Curfew

While, the fairgrounds is considered its own municipality, I believe it follows St. Paul curfew times, based on this Star Trib article. However, if your child is there as a representative of 4H, they have an 11pm curfew. Anne tells me that she has never had an issue being a teenager at the State Fair herself or as the mom of a teenager dropping off as young as 13 to work. No one has ever hassled them for being there until close (which is midnight most nights).

*Scott County Cities may have their own curfews. New Prague’s city code requires children under 16 to be off the streets from 10pm-6am Sunday through Thursday and 11am-6am on Friday and Saturday and kids who are age 16 to 18 have a curfew of 11pm to 6am Sunday through Thursday and 12pm-6am on Friday and Saturday. I don’t know which code trumps for the under 12 group, but I’d tend to err on the side of caution and have them in by 9pm on weekdays and 10pm on weekends.
