Twin Cities Halloween Trunk-or-Treat
Halloween trunk-or-treat – it’s a twist on traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating that may be a great option for your family. Churches, parks and pubs often offer thee events. The setup is typically a parking lot where kids can move between vehicle trunks (often all decked out for the season) and collect candy. It works especially well for those with younger children who are eager to fill their candy sacks but whose legs can’t hold up block after block. Bonus – most trunk-or-treat events are FREE to attend and open to the public.
Twin Cities Halloween Trick-or-Treat Trails
Another alternative to traditional trick or treat is a trick-or treat trail. Some of these trails are free events sponsored by local businesses and involve a trick-or-treat path in a local shopping district or inside a store. Other events we’ve included have a fee attached and are typically put on by community park & rec (and may require pre-registration). We’ve made sure to note when there is a fee for an event – otherwise, consider it free!
Trick-or-treating on Halloween in the Twin Cities
New to the Twin Cities? While in some areas of the country, municipalities set official trick-or-treat hours, Minnesota cities do not do this. Trick or treating is more of a spontaneous community event. Turn on your porch light if you want to participate. Expect kids to start showing up any time after school on October 31st and go until you turn off your lights. Neighborhoods vary in participation. Some parents, especially those with younger children, prefer the set times and safety that businesses offer with their alternative trick-or-treat options. We have those listed here.

Trick or treat at local businesses – multiple locations
In the event that you’re searching for one more place your child can stretch the use of their Halloween costume (and, yes, collect some goodies), several local Twin Cities grocery and chain stores traditionally offer kids the chance to trick-or-treat at participating merchants. Some locations will also offer other not-so-spooky entertainment for little ghouls and goblins to enjoy! Any of these events could be a great alternative if you’ve got little ones that aren’t quite ready to head out after dark on Halloween night (and I can speak, from experience, many of these stores offer some healthier alternatives to candy!) All events listed are FREE to attend.

This is it, Twin Cities. We have come to the last of our Halloween posts. Over the past few weeks we’ve traveled through pumpkin patches and corn mazes, detailed not-so-spooky options around the Metro, and talked treats. You’re likely as ready to stop reading about Halloween as we are ready to stop writing about it. Until 2026!
