Wander the trails through the quirky sculpture park at your own leisure. Bring a picnic lunch and make an afternoon of it. PLAN AHEAD: Caponi has a whole lineup of activities scheduled this season  forest bathing, theater in the park and community hot metal pour. Open Tues-Sun, 9am-8pm. More family fun ideas for Tuesday: Get moving with indoor activities

Open Climbing & Archery at Base Camp

6202 Bloomington Rd, St Paul, MN 55111
Open rock climbing is available on climbing walls inspired by the natural rock face of the St. Croix River bluffs near Taylors Falls. There are 16 routes to try between 24 and 32 feet high. It is required that youth are accompanied by an adult who is able to belay for them at the climbing wall. Open archery is available too. Register at the link. May 7, 2024, 6-9pm. $10/participant (adult spotters free).

Discover a new nature playground

May is a wonderful month to enjoy outdoor, unstructured play areas – before the skeeters and other bugs descend upon summer. Featured this week is the amazing DISCOVERY HOLLOW NATURE PLAY AREA within the TAMARACK NATURE CENTER property. This natural playground has been designed with all the elements kids crave: fallen logs and stumps to balance on, sticks to build forts, beautifully-engineered and arranged boulders to clamber over and a sufficient amount of sand and water to keep them entertained for hours.

It’s fun, unstructured, nearly always free and a total sanity-saver during our cold months. I used it routinely when my firstborn was a toddler.
