Sibley Park has scenic walking paths, roses and wildflowers, tennis courts, a wading pool, playground and tot lot for family enjoyment. Other amenities include restroom facilities and a drinking fountain. NOTE: Sibley Pool and Playground are closed through the summer of 2023. The playground reopens in Fall 2023. The pool reopens in Summer 2024. During construction at Sibley Minneapolis Parks suggests nearby Powderhorn Park, Corcoran Park, Phelps Park and Stewart Park. All have playgrounds and pools / splash pads. In April 2023, construction teams removed the park’s very old pool. Construction will continue through the summer of 2023, with a planned opening for the new pool in 2024. This park does not share space with a school, so the pool on normal years, it usually opens from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Minneapolis Parks maintains a skating rink and a hockey rink during outdoor skating season (usually mid-December through mid-February. This is also a popular park for sledding. The slope is relatively gentle and points inward away from any streets. Sibley Park historically participates in the summer meals program, offering free lunch to children under 18 years old from. Times, participating parks and details can be found on the MPRB website each June. Sibley Park will see an improvement project soon. Planned for the fall of 2022 and summer of 2023, the project will replace the playground equipment and the wading pool. MPRB may also explore a possible name change for the park. Henry Sibley is one of those problematic historical icons that the Twin Cities has named so many places and things after. He was the first governor of our state and held other political offices. He also oversaw the mass execution of 38 Dakotas after the Dakota War in 1862. According to MPR, “It was the largest mass execution in U.S. history.” MPRB will be looking for community feedback and opinions on both the updates and on the possible name change and making final decisions based on the outcome of those surveys.
