Summer movies in the park are a classic choice to enjoy together — especially outside where they are free! And for an indoor option to beat the summer heat, movie theaters with free or bargained price summer programs are also scattered around the Twin Cities. Measures have been put in place to aid in social distancing at these outdoor movie events. Many require pre-registering as space is limited. Don’t forget your own snacks and bug spray!

BLOOMINGTON: Movie on the Hill at Hyland Hills Ski Area. Bring blankets or chairs for the grassy amphitheater. The event runs 7-10:30pm.

  • Aug 5: Frozen 2

BROOKLYN PARK: Free drive-in movies at the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center. Parking begins at 8pm, movie at dusk. Pre-registration is required.

  • Aug 6: Cool Runnings
  • Aug 27: Homeward Bound
  • Oct 2: Secret Life of Pets 2

BURNSVILLE: Free drive-in movie at the Burnsville Ice Center parking lot. Gates open at 8pm, movie at will be screened at dusk. Please pre-register and remember to remain in your vehicle.

  • Aug 20: Sing

EAGAN: Bring your own seating to Rahn Elementary for an outdoor movie in September. Themed activities start at 7pm, movie at 8.

  • Sept 4: Frozen 2

EDEN PRAIRIE: Free Movies in the Park will be screened outdoors at Staring Lake Amphitheater. Pre-show entertainment begins at 7:30, movie at 9pm. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket. Dates in August:

  • Aug 7: Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse
  • Aug 14: Aladdin
  • Aug 21: Frozen 2

HASTINGS: Museum Movie Night will be held on the outdoor lawn of the LeDuc Historic Estate. Bring a chair or blanket; packaged concessions will be available to purchase. The free event starts at 8pm followed by a family scavenger hunt with prizes.

  • Aug 22: National Treasure

MAPLE GROVE: Movies at Sunset series at has gone to a drive-in format. Screening space is the grassy space in front of Maple Grove Lifetime Fitness. Admission is $20 and pre-registration is required. Parking begins at 7, movie at dusk. Two dates:

  • Aug 16: Home
  • Sept 25: Big Hero 6

MENDOTA: Museum Movie Night will be held on the outdoor lawn of the Sibley Historic Site. Bring a chair or blanket; packaged concessions will be available to purchase. The free event starts at 8pm followed by a family scavenger hunt with prizes.

  • Aug 20: National Treasure

MINNETONKA: Free Movies in the Park will take place at the Civic Center Amphitheater. Spots will be marked on the lawn to ensure social distancing; bring your blankets and chairs. Movies start at sunset during the following dates:

  • Aug 28: Toy Story 4
  • Sept 3: A Dog’s Way Home
  • Sept 11: Frozen 2

NEW HOPE: A free drive-in movie will be screened at dusk (around 8:30pm) at the New Hope Performance Center. Pre-registration is required as there is limited space.

  • Aug 21: Toy Story 4

OSSEO: Tuesday Night Music & Movies in Boerboom Park. Farmers Market onsite from 3-7pm followed by free live music and movies screened at dusk. Select Tuesdays through August:

  • Aug 11: Coco
  • Aug 18: Maleficent
  • Aug 25: Frozen 2

PLYMOUTH: Free drive-in movies at 2 locations – Plymouth Creek Center & TCF Bank at Plymouth Corporate Center. Movies will be screened in the parking lot at 8:45. Please remain in your vehicles. There will be portable restrooms onsite. 3 dates in August:

  • Aug 6: Monsters Inc
  • Aug 13: Aladdin
  • Aug 20: The Mighty Ducks

ROSEMOUNT: Bring your own seating for a free movie in Central Park. Movie begins around 9:30pm.

  • Aug 8: Dolittle

ROSEVILLE: Summer Roll-In Movies have come to the Guidant John Rose MN OVAL. Bring your own outdoor seating; the free movie begins at 7:30pm.

  • Aug 7: Secret Life of Pets 2

SHAKOPEE: Catch an outdoor movie as part of the city’s 2020 Huber Park Performance & Event Series. The free movie starts at sunset.

  • Aug 15: TBA

SOUTH ST PAUL: Museum Movie Night will be held in the parking lot between the Lawshe Memorial Museum & the South St Paul Library. Bring a chair or blanket; packaged concessions will be available to purchase. The free event starts at 8pm followed by a family scavenger hunt with prizes.

  • Aug 21: National Treasure

STILLWATER: Carpool Cinema drive-in movies will be held Tuesdays in downtown Stillwater. Cars must pre-register when the link is posted 5 days prior announcing the movie. The parking lot opens at 6:45; cars must be parked by 8pm.

  • Aug 4: The Lorax

WOODBURY: The Starlight Cinema Outdoor Movie Series will be presented drive-in style at Ojibway Park. This is a free event; activities start at 8pm and movie is screened at dusk. Dates in August include:

  • Aug 6: Angry Birds 2
  • Aug 20: Aladdin
  • Aug 27: Toy Story 4


Vali-Hi Drive-In: Minnesota’s last surviving drive-in movie theater is a treat on a summer evening. Concessions are inexpensive – or BYO treats. And kids 6-12 pay just a BUCK to get in! 3 movies play nightly starting at dusk. $9.50/adults

Well, the only problem is that you must be ready to burn a whole in your pocket or wallet due to the hefty prices of tickets at theatres. In addition to this, it’s not possible for everyone to take time out of this work schedule and head over to the theatre or wait for your favorite Tv show or Movie to be aired on Television

    1. Exactly! And that is why we love the free summer movies the parks put out. Often these are the same movies that were in the theatre at Christmas. I hope you had a chance to get to some of these this summer. Also, keep an eye on our calendar, because there are often free movies at parks and malls over the winter months.
