HCL’s family-friendly library resources
- Access BookFlix through Hennepin County Library. BookFlix is an online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks with related nonfiction. It helps kids improve reading skills and develop real-world knowledge and understanding. Best for ages 4-8. Learn more about accessing this resource with your library card here.
- Help your kids choose the next book with NoveList K-8. NoveList K-8 is an online resource that helps kids find a book based on their interests. It has suggestions for both fiction and nonfiction and can be sorted by topic, genre, grade level, and Lexile score. You can also enter a title of a book they enjoyed and get “read-alike” suggestions. This tool can be accessed with your library card. Other resources for book recommendations include HCL’s many pre-made booklists and curated reading suggestions from librarians online. I tested this service and the suggestions were exactly what I was looking for.
- Travel the world with CultureGrams and your Hennepin County library card. If you want to learn more about a country, U.S. state or Canadian Province, CultureGrams is a great first stop. This tool offers infographics of the average citizen, flags, cool facts, pronunciations and maps. You’ll also find slideshows and pictures, recipes to try, and extensive resources for teachers and parents. There is so much more in this tool that it is basically a grade school geography report all wrapped up for you (but you don’t have to tell your kid that). You’ll need a library card to access this tool.
- Get a free Minnesota State Park vehicle pass. Check out a 7-day park vehicle pass to Minnesota State Parks from select Hennepin County Library branches. The DNR is considering continuing this program through 2028.
- Free tickets! You may be able to find free or reduced priced tickets to Twin Cities arts activities and museums through the SmARTpass Program. I’ve found tickets for the family to traveling museum exhibits that would have otherwise been out of our price range, music performances and plays. If your family is on the larger size, you may have to take a smaller group or have more than one family member use their library card to access tickets.
- Events and activities. Hennepin County Library’s event’s calendar is bursting full of activities and events for families with kids of all ages — from baby to teens. Besides the obvious library storytimes and book clubs, look for game playing, cultural performances and movies, arts and crafts and STEM activities. Find upcoming family-friendly events here.
- Board games. Some branches, such as St. Louis Park library (one of the few libraries open on Sunday afternoons) have a selection of board games families can play together while visiting.
- Movies on demand with Kanopy! I love Kanopy for finding a family-night or date-night movie. I have found movies that came through the Minneapolis St. Paul Film Festival that I can’t find anywhere else as well as great movies for any mood. The adult catalog has limits on the number of movies streamed each month, but the kids catalog is unlimited. I find that I rarely go over my own limit but know that I could use other family member’s library cards if I did. The kids catalog is pretty okay, but a nice streaming option.
- Ebooks. E-books, e-audiobooks and movies are my family’s instant-gratification go to. Log in with your library card to find the perfect book to read right now. You do not need a special device like a Kindle. Any tablet, browser or phone will work with the library’s FREE Libby app.
- Homework help.
- Log in with a library card to get live online help daily
- During the school year, many branches have set tutoring hours where kids can get help on a first come, first serve basis. Find a schedule here.
- Free in-person reading help for K-5 students by appointment.
- Online resources for self-help.
- Learn more about homework help here.
- Story times: Librarians lead developmentally appropriate story hours for babies, toddlers & preschoolers, including a reading from children’s picture books with related games and activities geared toward promoting early literacy skills. These programs are as important for caregivers as young children, because they give parents tools to proactively encourage literacy.

We hope your family explores and discovers the wide range of family-friendly events and resources offered by Hennepin County Library. Whether you enjoy story times and crafts or educational workshops and movie screenings, there is a little something for everyone.
