Where to take your small fry in the Twin Cities to experience STEM/STEAM fun through interactive science? The Minneapolis-St Paul area has an excellent assortment of high quality museums with hands-on learning opportunities for all ages. Here’s a sampling of from our suggestions of BEST PLACES FOR HANDS-ON SCIENCE WITH KIDS IN THE TWIN CITIES.
- BAKKEN MUSEUM | Minneapolis: Interesting exhibits all about electricity that cater to youth and families.
- BELL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORYÂ | St Paul: Far-out space exhibits and intriguing animal dioramas make it really special.
- SCIENCE MUSEUM OF MINNESOTA | St Paul: World-class science exhibits and an IMAX theater. Tip: The Science Museum can be a splurge. For a bit of free fun, you can visit the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area Visitor Center in the museum’s lobby.
- THE WORKS MUSEUM | Bloomington: Hands-on engineering exhibits, kid-friendly workshops, and the chance for kids to build, design and problem solve.

- Incorporate one of these fun science activities for kids into your day.
- Read aloud Kid Innovators: True Tales of Childhood from Inventors and Trailblazers by Robin Stevenson (Recommended for ages 9-12). Bookflix has several science and math-related pairings to choose among.
- Dinner ideas:Â Bright Horizons has some ideas for making dinner preparations a STEM activity, including some questions you can use for dinner conversation starters.

- Buoyancy (sink or float): Visit Discovery Hollow at Tamarack Nature Center and play in the water feature.
- Shadow activities: Visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum or try this Kids Shadow Drawing Activity anywhere.
- States of matter: Go ice fishing! Yes, seriously. Take a few moments to reflect on the water cycle (ice on the surface, water underneath, clouds above) and how it is the same substance as liquid, solid or gas.
- Biology: There are plenty of hands-on activities in the Human Body Gallery exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota.
