Our visit to The Works Museum
Looking for fun, educational activities for your preschooler? Check out Museum Mondays at The Works, where kids can engage in hands-on STEM activities and learn through play! The Works is a small museum in Bloomington, Minnesota, with a mission “to inspire the next generation of innovators, engineers, and creative problem solvers.” During the school year, the museum is open most Monday mornings from 10am-1pm (we still encourage you to double check the provided link before heading out!). This is a quieter time to visit the museum. While the stations are usually geared toward grade school kids ages 5-12, Mondays are a perfect opportunity for parents to take advantage of the hands-on nature of the exhibits to engage their toddlers and preschoolers.
In 2023, The Works rebranded their popular “Pre-K Mondays” as “Museum Mondays,” making it more inclusive to all kids. While the galleries are open to all during this time, assuming it is not a school holiday, these Monday mornings will probably attract mainly toddlers, preschoolers and their parents and will be a perfect time to foster the natural curiosity of tiny scientists with preschool STEM activities.
Take your preschooler to The Works on Mondays
The youngest visitors may be able to enjoy a relatively quiet experience. While your children may see this as a weekly play time, parents will love the playful way the museum introduces hands-on stem challenges. Bonus, all the ingredients and different materials are provided and you can leave the tiny loose parts behind – no cleanup.
The exhibits are all hands-on and often use toys to encourage fun stem activities. These toddler proof experiences are simply a lot of fun! But also encourage math skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the form of play. For instance:
- My son’s favorite was consistently the K’NEX building station, where he could design a vehicle and then time it on a racetrack. He may not have realized he was developing fine motor skills while exercising his creativity.
- My toddler was effortlessly happy building ice palaces in the corner of foam blocks and belting out “Let It Go” to her heart’s content.
- Kids can build with Magna-Tiles while also discovering the physics of magnetism.
- Don’t forget about the tinkering they can do in the Experience Gallery.
