Named for a large willow tree located within the park, Big Willow Park is a 95 acre community park in Minnetonka that encompasses Big Willow Community Preserve and an athletic complex. Its northern border is Minnehaha creek and its southern edge borders Minnetonka Boulevard. The park encompasses the city’s public works facility. Family-friendly amenities include a playground and picturesque walking paths, but it is largely sports fields. There is off street parking and seasonal restrooms and a drinking fountain available.

Located right next to the parking lot (with a chain link fence to separate it), the park has a good-sized playground. The flooring is wood-chip and the equipment offers challenging play opportunities at a variety of developmental levels.

7 Fun things for families at Big Willow Park

Take some time to play on the playground. The set up lends itself well to a game of follow the leader and a DIY “ninja course”. Parents can find a bench and rest while the kids go crazy.
Play outdoor games in the community athletic fields, soccer field, or play area.
Pack a picnic and spread a blanket near the playground for a “play-and-lunch” outing.
The City of Minnetonka recommends going on a hunt for the group of willow trees that gave the park its name. Visitors can find them just north of the smaller parking lot off Minnetonka Boulevard.

Take a hike along the year-round trails for ever-changing seasonal views of Minnehaha Creek.
This park would make a good place to come for bike-ride as the full trail loop is almost three miles.

Big Willow Park trails

The park has over two miles of trails that are available year-round and are plowed during the winter. According to the city, you can start a 2.8-mile loop at the small parking lot, heading north through the park Cedar Lake Road, continue to follow the path to County Road 73 and Minnetonka Boulevard until you return to the parking lot. Trails also connect to other parks in the area, including Mayflower Park, Hilloway Park and Meadow Park. When hiking the trails, look for an old wooden bridge crossing Minnehaha Creek.
