The Valentines each kid earnestly made the year they were in kindergarten still adorn my little office walls and I love them dearly. Skip spendy Hallmark and have yours craft their own Valentines at these super family-friendly free & inexpensive events:
- Love Local: MCBA Open House | Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis
Artist-led Valentines-themed activities: letterpress printed postcards, handmade heart-shaped paper, pop-up cards, and more. Feb 8, 10am-2pm, FREE.
- Michael’s Kids Club Valentine projects

Show the love simply by spending time with each other out and about – these can be the best gifts of all:
Winter Recreation | Keller Regional Park, Maplewood
Weather permitting, come out to explore the new winter recreation area. Try out cross-country skiing, kick-sledding and tea kettle curling. Activities take place at the Keller Park Golfview picnic area. Feb 7- 9. 11am-4pm.
Wonders of Winter | Central Park, Maple Grove
Bring your skates (or rent for $6) for the ice skating loop, kicksledding, snowshoeing, wagon rides and more free winter activities for the family. 11am-3pm, FREE.
Art Shanty Projects – final weekend! | Lake Harriet, Minneapolis
Back for 2020! Not only are these 19 unique ice houses designed by local artists, they are strongly encouraged to be interactive and fun! Great for families with kids. Weekends only through Feb 9, 2020. 10am-4pm. FREE admission with donations encouraged.
Hiawatha Heartwarmer | Lake Hiawatha Park, Minneapolis
Winter activities (skating, bonfire, horse-drawn hayride, snow sculptures, etc.) for the whole family. Warm up inside with hot drinks and music. Kids can craft or dance to a DJ. Feb 8, 12-3pm. FREE.
Burnsville Polar Fest | North River Hills Park
Brand new in 2020 the festival features snow painting, sledding, ice skating, horse-drawn carriage rides, a kids DJ and food trucks. Feb 8, 11am-2pm. FREE.
WinterFest | Loring Park, Minneapolis
A winter celebration featuring free hot cocoa, s’mores, bonfire, skating, music, crafts and carriage rides. Feb 8, 1-3pm, FREE.
Winterfest | Wesley Park, Golden Valley
Sledding, ice skating, hayrides, DJ, and a bonfire with marshmallow roasting. Feb 8, 12-2pm. FREE.
