The Oxford Community Center is the combined Jimmy Lee Recreation Center and the Great River Water Park – a year-round indoor water park. Besides the water park, this facility offers families a playground, four gymnasiums, a picnic area and several sports fields. Great River Water Park is an indoor aquatics facility that offers families swimming lessons and open swim times. Life jackets are available to borrow for free, and there is also a children’s activity pool. Daily admission is generally one of the best deals in the Twin Cities (See our list of best indoor waterparks by price here). Memberships are also available. The water park closes for the summer season starting in early June and reopens in early September. Work began on the renovation of the existing play area at Jimmy Lee in late October of 2018 and was finished in August of 2019. The new play equipment meets CPSC and ADA guidelines and has a synthetic resilient surface to provide more accessibility and increase safety. Artist Arlene Birt was been commissioned to create artwork to recognize Jimmy Lee. The playground has a sports theme. See images in the Facebook post embedded below: Installation of new modern computer facilities was completed in 2018. Community members can use the lab to develop computer literacy and skills. Other rec centers with modernized computer labs include Martin Luther King Recreation Center, El Rio Vista Recreation Center, Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center, Hazel Park Recreation Center and Rice Recreation Center Teen Zone. St. Paul Parks and Recreation will also host trainings in these recreation centers. St. Paul Recreational Centers have rooms available for rent. Rooms at this facility include a craft room, a computer lab, a dance studio (wouldn’t it be fun to have a ballerina birthday party in a dance studio?), four gymnasiums and a multi-purpose room. Great River Water Park traditionally offers birthday party packages. For those who are not looking for a package, sun shelters can be rented. Saint Paul Parks offers a free summer meals program for youth 18 years of age and under and Oxford Community Center traditionally participates.
