Touch-A-Truck and More: Twin Cities Public Works Open House Calendar

Got kids who are just crazy about getting up close to big rigs? Good news! Your Modern Family recently shared their research on why this obsession makes kids smarter! Our calendar of Twin Cities Touch-A-Truck events and Public Works Open Houses will help you find them!

Our calendar of Twin Cities Touch-A-Truck events and Public Works Open Houses will help you find them!While there are touch-a-truck opportunities throughout the year, the best times to find events are in May, during National Public Works Week, and in October, during Fire Prevention Month. Because it is easier to offer these events outdoors, summer months naturally have more opportunities than winter months.

Fall 2021 – Touch-A-Truck Events

Oakdale Touch-a-Truck

Dozens of vehicles will be parked for children to climb on, view up close and learn about. Free ice cream treats included. Event will be held at Walton Park. Sept 7, 5-8pm.

Touch-a-Truck at Maplewood Mall

Outside door #2 in the parking will be lots of fun vehicles for kids to get up close to. Sept 11, 12-2pm.

Northtown Mall Touch-a-Truck

Kids can get close to a firetruck, garbage truck, ambulance and more plus meet the drivers. Truck-themed activities and games as well. Sept 18, 12-2pm.

Woodbury Big Truck Day

Besides large vehicles of all types, the Jolly Pops perform at 10:30 a.m. Head to the East parking lot of Woodbury’s CENTRAL PARK. September 25. 9:00am-12:o0pm, FREE.

Shakopee Fire Department Open House

All kinds of activities for Fire Prevention Week – refreshments, fire truck tours and the opportunity to spray a fire hose and rescue a teddy bear from a training room. The vehicle fire demonstration will be at 6 p.m. Oct 4, 5-7pm.

Minnetonka City & Fire Department Open House

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, visit the city’s brand new fire station, take fire truck rides, watch demos, and enjoy refreshments and fireworks. Oct 5, 5-8pm.

Eden Prairie City-Wide Open House

According to the city’s website, highlights may include exhibits, demonstrations, and City vehicles and equipment. Oct 9, 11am-2pm.

Hopkins Fire Department Open House

The city hosts an annual Fire Prevention event open house that includes fire truck rides, hands-on demos and free food. Oct 9, 10am-2pm.

Halloween at the Lake

Check out first responder vehicles while collecting treats and having some Halloween fun. The event is held at PARKERS LAKE PLAYFIELD in Plymouth. Oct 29, 5-8pm.

Summer 2021 – Touch-A-Truck Events to Watch for Again in 2022

Bring a picnic, play on the playground at Prairie Park, cool off at the splash pad and enjoy a free Touch-A-Truck event. June 1.

Among other activities and exhibits at BRUENTRUP HERITAGE FARM, visitors can see a 1923 Pirsch fire truck. If you go on Sunday, see demos of vintage machines. The farm is located in Maplewood. Sunday & Monday, June 6 & 7; Monday, July 12; Sunday & Monday, August 1 & 2; Sunday & Monday, September 5 & 6. 11:00am – 2:00pm, FREE.

Heavy Metal Drive Thru Extreme Sandbox

Watch construction equipment at work in this drive-thru experience in Hastings. All tickets, including free general admission required pre-purchase. Saturday, June 26th. 1pm, 3pm, 5pm & 7pm. Free options for all 1pm & 3pm events.

Brooklyn Park Night Out | Community Activity Center

Police squad car and fire trucks will be at Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center. Friday, July 30th, 7pm-11pm. FREE

North St Paul Police and Fire National Night Out Open House

Residents are invited to visit the North St. Paul Police and Fire Department staff at an Open House at City Hall. Stop by to meet the team and to enjoy some refreshments. Aug 3, 5-7pm.

Brooklyn Park Police, Fire & Recreation Open House Crawl

Saturday, August 14th | 12pm-3pm | FREE – Part of Tater Daze

  • Police Station: 5400 85th Avenue North
  • Recreation: 5600 85th Avenue North
  • Fire Station: 5700 85th Avenue North

Chaska Community Center Touch-a-Truck

Sit in a fire truck, a police squad car, or a big snow plow. Play carnival games, enjoy free ice cream and popcorn and take in a kid-friendly concert at 6:30pm. Aug 19, 5-7:30pm.

If you have never visited the Firefighters Hall and Museum in Minneapolis, this is a great place to climb on Fire Trucks any weekend. In the summer months, you may even get a chance to go for a ride!
