The Schaper Park Challenge Course is a Golden Valley park built to encourage participants to be active. The “ninja course” play area strives to make it possible for families of all ability levels to enjoy the park. The fitness challenge course is said to be designed for ages 13+, though we found that much younger kids also enjoy equipment that includes obstacles that participants navigate over, under, around, and through as they race against the clock. Attention parents of tweens and teens: this is a playground that will capture their interest as well as younger siblings!

Schaper Park Challenge Course

There are two “challenges” that can be timed by stop clocks – a 40 yard dash (2 participants at a time) and a series of obstacles in a switchback layout. The turf is very soft and forgiving throughout the park. The only true “challenge” we experienced is that there is often a short line for the stop clock and it can be difficult with many kids playing at the park to get a clear path through the obstacle course. Don’t let that stop you from trying, though!

Schaper Park & Challenge Course - Great for Teens & Tweens

Besides the wonderful challenge course, Schaper Park’s amenities include activities for the whole family, including:

  1. A children’s inclusive playground,
  2. A couple softball diamonds – sized for both kids and adults that could be used for a family kickball game when not in use for games
  3. Approximately a half mile of trails for hiking along a scenic route through restored wetlands and native plants.
  4. A large open grassy area where families could spread a blanket or play traditional outdoor games.
  5. There are picnic tables available for an outdoor meal.
  6. There is a geocache located at this park.
  7. The Luce Line Regional Trail travels through Schaper Park.

The park includes parking and restrooms available for regional trail users. Bring a water bottle – the closest drinking fountain is a short walk away from the playground equipment. There are benches scattered around the park for resting and a sun shelter. There is a parking lot that holds over 80 vehicles, but it can sometimes fill up during events.
