In 2017, The Minnesota State Capitol celebrated a grand reopening after restoration and repairs were completed. Families can tour the capitol either with a guide or on their own.

Tours at the Minnesota State Capitol

Guided tours last 45 minutes and start on the hour weekdays from 10am to 2pm and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm for a suggested donation of $5. Get an overview of Capitol history, view the art and architecture, and learn a bit about state government. You’ll also learn about the recent restoration.

With smaller kids you may not be ready to commit to a 45-minute tour but still want to learn a little. Find a suggested itinerary for self-guided tours here.

Architecture, Art and Exhibits at the Minnesota State Capitol

The Capitol was designed by Minnesota architect, Cass Gilbert, who you can learn a little more about here. Depending on the age of your kids and how in depth you want your visit to be, the Capitol’s website has a wealth of information that you can study as a family before or after your visit regarding the art and exhibits currently on display.

Useful Information for Parents

  • Bring your own stroller if you feel you will need one because the state capitol does not have strollers available.
  • All restrooms have diaper changing stations
  • WiFi is available and you may need it for a self-guided tour.
  • Pair this outing with a tour of the St. Paul Cathedral or special events, like History Matters Day each March.
