Lowe’s monthly Kids Workshops provide a fun and educational opportunity for kids to learn building skills through hands-on projects, creating toys, gifts and keepsakes. Keep reading to learn more about the workshops and Twin Cities locations.

The Lowe’s website describes their DIY Kids’ Workshops as “free, monthly, in-store events designed to inspire the next generation of builders while growing their confidence and DIY skillset”. The completed projects can make great gifts for grandparents or siblings at Christmas, Mother’s Day gifts, Father’s Day gifts or whenever and special handmade gift may be appropriate.

Attending Lowe’s DIY Kids Workshops

Free Lowe’s kids workshops are geared towards any “mini-DIYer” age 4-11. Much like the Home Depot Kids workshops that Gianna visited, these monthly events are national, so you will usually find the same craft offered at every store and kids will receive a free workshop apron, commemorative pin and free certificate of achievement for participating. The idea is that you bring your apron back each month and collect pins to add to it. Past projects have included simple builds like a wooden snowman picture frame, a miniature putting green kit, dancing turkey toy, jolly holiday ornament or the flower planter pictured below. Our project came with stickers to decorate, but, if you have a little paint leftover from a project, these kits are perfect for using up extras.

How to register for the next workshop

Registration for select time slots is encouraged, but stores will give remaining kits to walk-ins beginning at noon on the day of the workshop (subject to availability, of course). You will need to create an account and select your store location to reserve a timeslot. Registration generally opens about a month prior to each free DIY kids workshop, but Lowe’s will often list projects for a few months in advance. If you see one you like, you can make a calendar reminder to come back and sign up on the first day to get your preferred time slot.

While Home Depot offers its hands-on workshop on the first Saturday of the month. Lowe’s Build and Grow Workshops are held on the second Saturday, so you can feasibly do both family events in a month. These building events are great opportunities to make gifts for grandparents at Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or whenever an occasion would call for a special handmade gift from a child.

Bring a project home with Lowe’s DIY Kits

If you enjoy doing projects together and want to do some at home in between visits, you can find inexpensive kits to purchase on their website. I searched keyword “kids” to find projects appropriate for children. You’ll also find kid-sized tools and tool kits in this search. Kids will include everything you need to complete your handmade toy or gift — including the wood cutouts and any nails, glue or stickers and simple step-by-step instructions.

We were given a free take-home kit and hammer during a Saturday visit to buy project supplies, but you can register for the free workshops to avoid uncertainty
