Besides a place to adopt your family pet, the Animal Humane Society offers other family and youth programs, including classes, camps and story times at some locations. While many of the activities have been put on hold recently, families can visit the AHS website to find online lesson plans and activities for grades K-12.

From the website: “At Animal Humane Society, we’re committed to creating second chances for animals in need. But we do so much more than adoption. We offer pet training classes, low-cost veterinary care, youth camps and education programs, and free pet advice and resources — providing care and services to nearly 100,000 animals across Minnesota every year throughout our 4 twin cities locations. Animal Humane Society is more than a shelter. We’re creating a better world for animals and the people who love them.”
Furry Tales Story Time
After a hiatus, the Golden Valley location is again offering Furry Tales story times. This series is geared towards preschool kids between 2-4 years. Each session, preschoolers and their caregivers can enjoy a picture storybook, craft and special time with an animal. The program is now $5/child and pre-registration is required. For bigger kids, see the Rescue Readers program.
Birthday parties at the Animal Humane Society
After a hiatus, onsite birthday parties have been brought back to the Golden Valley location. Parties include 45 minutes of staff led activities and 45 minutes use of the party room.
There is also a FREE DIY party kit available to have your own adopt-a-pet themed birthday party with stuffed pets. Find other ideas for birthday parties in our Guide to Twin Cities Birthday Parties for Kids
Volunteer at the Animal Humane Society
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. For younger kids, the AHS recommends becoming involved in their educational programs or camps, fostering as a family or joining a Project Purpose workshops that give kids between the ages of 12-15 seasonal service projects. These workshops does not offer significant animal contact. Kids 6+ can also participate in Rescue Readers. Read more about that program here.
Animal Humane Society summer camps
Animal-themed summer camps are offered in five-day sessions during June through August for kids finishing grades 3-10. These camps fill quickly and you’ll want to get signed up early in February. This camp is featured in our annual summer camp guide, where we list updated information on dates and prices.
