One of our favorite activities is Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday. This Saturday, January 4, 2014 is the first Saturday of the month and of the year. Start on a journey From Morocco to the Moon.
It’s a free event and you can park in the Walker Art Center Ramp for a minimal fee ($4, I think?). They provide a wide variety of activities for the family to enjoy together. These activities are suggested for ages 6-12, but my little 2 year old and 4 year old in the past have enjoyed them as well.
This is what you can experience on your exploration.
- North African Music Performance by Amwaaj, 11 am and 1 pm
Relax in the Walker Cinema and listen to the sounds of North Africa. Hear and learn about the oud, nay, violin, and different instruments. Get a chance to try out the instruments with the musicians.
- Tales of Magic and Mystery Theatre Workshop, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, and 12:30 pm
This looks the most exciting to me. Children’s Theatre Company will lead this interesting workshop in the Garden Terrace Room. Compare Moroccan folk tales with familiar fairytales as you work together as a family.
- Harbor Tales, film 10 am–5 pm
Away We Go, 10 am–3 pm, Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab
Freeze Frame, 10 am–3 pm, Cargill Lounge
- Gallery Activities, 11 am–2 pm
Explore the galleries, but keep in mind you may want to do a quick once over before you expose your kids to something you aren’t ready to discuss with them.
What about making a New Year’s Resolution to make it to each Free First Saturday this year.
