The Germanic-American Institute has a mission to foster appreciation and understanding of German culture, language, arts, and ongoing history. It also has a lending library with German language books, films, CDs, & games available to GAI members. Family friendly offerings include German-immersion preschool and monthly storytimes for younger kids, summer camps for grade school children and several annual events for the whole family.

The GAI parking lot is often reserved for visitors with mobility challenges during community events. Look for street parking along Summit Avenue and nearby streets.

Annual events at Germanic-American Institute

GAI offers a variety of public events throughout the year, including Deutsche Tage Weekend in June, Oktoberfest in September and a Holiday Open Haus in December. Families may also enjoy author talks, speakers, film screenings, and performers from across the U.S. and Europe.

GAI preschool programming

Storytime

Look for monthly German language storytimes at GAI. Best for bilingual and German-speaking families, story times are conducted entirely in German. Pre-registration required.

Kinderstube

Kinderstube is a German-language immersion preschool program offered by GAI in both Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

German Language Summer Camps at GAI

GAI offers summer German language camps for kids between the ages of 5 years old and 13 years old. They offer both half and full day camps plus extended care options. Learn more in our annual summer camp guide.
