The Saint Paul Saints pride themselves on providing the best entertainment value in the Twin Cities. As much as I enjoy going to the ballpark as a family, a major league baseball game is rarely in the budget for our family of six, but  the St Paul Saints–the Twin Cities minor league team– are an option we can count on. There are so many things to keep kids of all ages engaged and entertained — they will love the saints mascot, Mudonna the pig, the Play Zone play area, between-inning entertainment and the various activities and promotions throughout the season.

Saints Games are often much less crowded than major league games, making them a great option for introducing kids to professional baseball. Whether it is a toddler’s first game or you have high-school baseball fans, here are some other ways to make it fun — some of these ideas come from the Saints website and others from experienced spectators and parents.

  1. Before you go, study the roster: Who are the pitchers? Who are the catchers? Help your child choose a favorite player that you can watch for together and cheer on during the game.
  2. Depending on your kids ages, you may want to get there early for extra time on the playground and exploring or you may want to arrive right before the game starts to keep the outing as short as possible. Also, it is okay to leave early. You are raising up the next generation of game lovers and that is best done in smaller doses until they are ready for a full game.
  3. Grab a scorecard on your way in. They are located at the fan services desk in section 105.
  4. Take part in any on-field promotions. They offer them at every game.
  5. Definitely scope out the playground early, so you know where it is when you need it.
    Note: While the play structure is free, many of the activities in the play area have a fee.
  6. Take a walk past the press box during the 7th inning stretch to catch a box of peanuts.
  7. Enjoy the “ushertainers” who help get the crowd excited during games.
  8. Come early for Saturday and Sunday games, so you can visit the St. Paul Farmers Market.
  9. The Fireworks after select games are really special. Fans get a stadium view of the fireworks without the crowds and mosquitoes that can plague a typical fireworks display.

What to pack for a baseball game with kids

  1. Dress for the weather and in layers. Baseball caps or other sun visors are a good idea.
  2. Bring baseball gloves. Even just the possibility of catching a foul ball can make the game more fun for kids.
  3. CHS Field does not require clear stadium bags or have a size limit, but you may have your bag inspected, so you may want to pack lightly.
  4. Water bottles (and baby formula if you need it). Other outside food is not allowed.
  5. Don’t forget sunscreen and maybe bug repellant.
  6. A pen or pencil so you can fill out the scorecard.
  7. Consider noise-cancelling headphones. It can get loud, especially on fireworks nights.
  8. If you really want to stay for the whole game and you don’t think your child is up for it, bring along an iPad and headphones. They can watch Netflix.

Finding the kids play area during the game

Small kids may need a break from the game of baseball and running up and down the bleachers may not always be appropriate. The Kids Play area at CHS Field is named the HealthPartners PowerUp Play Zone. You can find it behind the black center field wall on the concourse. Kids can climb a 12-foot high climbing wall, play Veggieland (a life size take on Candyland), slide down the Fruit Chute, bounce in the club Clementine bounce house and play on the Rainbow climbing structure.

More family resources at CHS Field

  • Breastfeeding mothers or those who just want to feed their baby in peace during a game, can use the Mother’s Nursing Room. Find it behind Section 116.
  • There are two Family Restrooms at CHS Field.  They are located behind Sections 107 and 112.
  • Stroller policy: Strollers are allowed at Saints games, but there is not stroller parking area, so you will want to bring your smallest folding stroller. They need to be folded under your seat while you are watching the game. Aisle parking is not allowed.

Outside food & beverages at CHS Field

Outside food and beverages (except sealed water bottles and baby formula) are not allowed. When I asked at a game, I was told that the Saints are pretty lax about this rule. I’ve not tested this information, because concessions support the team and are generally affordable.

Tailgating at the Saint Paul Saints games

After Midway Stadium closed and the Twins moved to their new stadium, CHS Field opened in Lowertown St. Paul in 2015. This is a busier area of St. Paul. However, the Saints provide a tailgating lot a couple blocks from the field at the corner of Lafayette Street and Prince Street just off Kellogg Boulevard.  Food and beverages are all allowed on the lot while there is a fee for parking and having a grill.

Saint Paul Saints berm seats

The berm seats are on a grassy hill above the bullpen, behind left field. These are the tickets that cost $5 for anyone. Ticket sales of for Berm seats are only in person on the day of game. If you are flexible and/or want to work around the moods of children, day-of tickets may be your best bet. Small kids in particular, actually love these seats. They can watch the game and still move. It is also close to the playground area and restrooms! Also, the fact that these tickets are sold day of and first come, first serve, means parents can choose their day of attendance based on less plannable circumstances, like a child’s mood and weather.

City of Baseball Museum

Admission to the City of Baseball Museum is FREE with your Saints ticket.  It has rotating exhibits and an Interactive Tech Table that kids will find fun. The table introduces Saints history with videos, photos and interactive fun.
