Battle Creek Regional Park is a 750-acre urban park close to downtown St. Paul but in most places has the feel of being tucked much farther way. The park is split into two halves, both of which are managed by Ramsey County Parks. The western unit is located within St Paul and is connected to the eastern unit in Maplewood by a slim biking and pedestrian trail that crosses McKnight Road, the boundary line between the two cities.

The St Paul portion of Battle Creek Park runs along the Mississippi and offers opportunities for nature watching, mountain biking and hiking. According to the National Park Service, you might see deer, fox, herons, egrets or hawks during a walk through the park.

Battle Creek Recreation Center

Battle Creek Recreation Center is operated by the City of St Paul. It offers open gym, tot times for preschool-aged children and hosts classes, camps and occasional family events. Hours change seasonally and are subject to change without notice, so watch our calendar or check the city of St. Paul’s website and call ahead to confirm. The rec center is adjacent to the Winter Recreation Area of Battle Creek Park, making it convenient to stop in to rent equipment or warm up. The center is also poised near an entrance to the the park’s maze of mountain biking trails.

Outdoor skating rinks and warming house

Ice rinks in St. Paul parks are free and open during the winter months dependent on weather and ice quality. This park has a warming house that is open on weekdays from 9am to 8:30pm; Saturdays from 9am to 12:30pm and Sundays from 12pm to 3:30pm.

Sledding hill

Battle Creek Park has a steep, exciting hill for sledding. This hill is lit until 9pm when conditions allow. Sledding in St Paul’s parks is always free.

Cross-country skiing

Battle Creek Park has two cross country ski trails. The west trail is the only Ramsey County trail that allows skate skiing. A Ski Pass is required on county ski trails; however we’ve discovered many events offered by Ramsey County where families and individuals can try out ski equipment for free.

Greater Battle Creek Regional Park

The St Paul section of Battle Creek Park has a wild feel to it with lovely paved trails for biking and hiking. There are 25 picnic tables and 8 grills spread throughout the park.
