Twin Cities Gymnastic Classes for Kids

Find the best gymnastic classes for kids in the Twin Cities area. From beginner to advanced, these classes offer a fun and safe way for children to build strength, flexibility, and coordination.

Gymnastics, balance, coordination, flexibility — not my thing. But, suddenly I find myself with a child who can’t get enough. She quickly moved from park tumbling class to advanced gymnastics classes. While we loved our beginners class through MPRB and the convenience of of learning basic skills at a nearby park, we reached a point where I needed to find local gyms with instructors that she could grow with. We found ourselves well beyond basic tumbling skills but not ready for the commitment of a competitive team. These studios offer classes for all levels. For us, it fills a gap between recreational gymnastics classes and the high school team she can try out for in 7th grade.

We continue to explore gymnastics studios and classes throughout the Twin Cities and will add new studios as we find them. Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments.

What to Expect in Gymnastics Classes

Parent/Child Programs for Tots

If your child is walking, many of these studios offer parent/child classes. Parents will learn how to help their tot develop overall motor skills and coordination through, scarf play, jumping, rolling, climbing, and swinging — all overseen by an instructor. These classes are kept small and hands-on for the parent, and they focus on imaginative play and developing a positive association with gymnastics classes for the toddler.

Tumbling Classes – Preschool Age+

Beginner preschool programs continue to focus on coordination, but start to incorporate some basic skills, like forward rolls (somersaults), handstands, cartwheels and low balance beams. Most classes offer some time jumping on a trampoline.

Intermediate and Advanced Classes for Grade School+

These classes are for children with prior gymnastics experience. If they have an interest and aptitude for gymnastics, they can move on with intermediate and advanced skills where they learn to use a higher balance beam, the vault, floor work, high bar, parallel bars, uneven bars and pommel horse. Kids still get some trampoline time, too.

Other programs sometimes offered at gyms:

  • Obstacle Course Training (American Ninja Warrior)
  • Parkour

10 Questions to ask when comparing studios:

While we have all heard the horror stories of  former gymnasts who were pushed too hard, a good studio should offer a new challenge for every stage of childhood, should build self-esteem and be some serious fun. We encourage parents to ask a lot of questions when choosing coaches and instructors for young athletes.

  1. What are the instructors qualifications, training and experience? Are they professional gymnasts? Certified coaches?, etc.
  2. What is the instructor/athlete class ratio?
  3. Will my child be offered routines, drills and exercises that can be done at home with minimal equipment between weekly classes?
  4. Does the studio offer inclusive classes, a positive community, safe spaces and supportive instructors for all levels?
  5. What previous experience and/or the minimum level of fitness the child should reach before beginning each program.
  6. Does the studio offer open gym times to its students for additional practice? Is it drop-in or does it require pre-registration?
  7. What different apparatus will be used in the class?
  8. How should the participants dress? Are leotards the expectation or can kids wear t-shirts and shorts? Are shoes and/or socks allowed? Do they need hair-ties for long hair? Does to studio have extras when they inevitably forget?
  9. What is the tuition fee? How is it paid? How do you cancel? When does the studio offer refunds?
  10. Does the studio require a signed waiver before classes begin and how do parents access that waiver?
