When I told my 10-year-old we were going to go see the Music of Taylor Swift & More for Kids at First Avenue, she was incredibly resistant to the idea. If it wasn’t real Taylor Swift, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go. I didn’t offer her an option, as I was offered review tickets and I wasn’t going to go by myself. For the days, leading up to the show, she kept asking if there was any possibility Taylor Swift would just show up. There is always a possibility. She wasn’t alone in this idea, a family we ran into on our way into the show was debating the same possibility. Taylor Swift did not show up. But Bri and the Antiheroes produced a great show and my daughter LOVED the experience. She really wants to go again with the whole family next time.
What to Expect at a Rock and Roll Playhouse show
The fun thing about Rock and Roll Playhouse shows is that First Avenue is exactly as you would expect for an adult show. It is dark, it is loud, it is crowded, and it is so much fun. The dance floor was already crowding with kids and their adults when we entered about the time doors opened.
We decided to sit upstairs by the cool kids (although I personaly had hoped we would find a spot on the dance floor). The second level is great for viewing the show but, if you love to dance, than definitely hit the dance floor. The bar is open at these events, adults can find their favorite adult beverage and kids can get pop. The non-alcoholic selection isn’t awesome, but my kids (like most kids) don’t care as long as the pop is heavy on high fructose corn syrup.
Expect all your favorite songs. Obviously you picked the show based on a favorite band or music style. The tribute band playing these shows is made up of professional musicians who will deliver a quality show.
Expect the show to be loud. Our decimal alarms on our phones went off around the 30-minute mark of this one-hour show. You may want to bring sound dampeners if sound is an issue for you or your child.
Expect the atmosphere to be dark and crowded. Of course the crowd is made up of kids with their parents, so I felt pretty comfortable allowing a 10-year-old to go to the restroom on the other side of the club by herself. (If, like me, you haven’t been in First Ave in 20 years, the women’s room is cleaner and the latches work on all the stalls now).
Expect to pay for parking or use MetroTransit. We always bus downtown, but if you aren’t bussing than you will need to find and likely pay for parking. Remember that, unlike St. Paul, Minneapolis charges for metered parking downtown on Sundays.
What is this going to cost?
- Tickets with processing fees are approximately $25.00/each (free for kids 1 and under)
- Bus/Light Rail rides: $2/adults; $1 kids ages 6-12; Free for kids under 6.
- Parking: This depends on where you park and whether there is an event going on, but you can likely find parking for $6 or less.
- You gotta get drinks. Two pops cost us under $10 with a tip.
Total for one parent and a child can be under $100 with a stop for coffee and a cake pop after the show (because that is an expectation when we go downtown).
Ways to save: I have, on occasion, seen Rock and Roll Playhouse tickets through MELSA’s Smartpass program. It is definitely worth watching for free tickets.
