This weekend is my last shot for 2014: if I don’t get the family out to the Art Shanty Projects on White Bear Lake I’ll have failed something like five years running. To add extra urgency, the little art galleries on ice are now slated to pop up biannually. Meaning, our next chance to check them out won’t be until 2016.
Not only are these unique icehouses designed by local artists, they are strongly encouraged to be interactive. Herein lies the fun of bringing the whole family out to see them. My sporty 8-year-old son, for instance, would love the Curling Clubhouse Ice Shanty. Curling lessons for him and a warming house with observation deck for Mom and Dad! In the Noah’s Art Shanty, my artsy little girls would love molding clay animals. This Saturday will also feature special storytelling sessions in the Noah’s Art Shanty at 2, 3, and 4pm. I could see our whole family getting into the Pedal Bear, a bicycle-powered polar bear puppet that transports guests across frozen White Bear Lake.
Note: the warming house hosted by the White Bear Center for the Arts (the one with the cocoa and cookies!) will NOT be available this weekend. A downer, sure, but after five years of Art Shanty Project fails, we won’t be deterred.
