Uŋčí Makhá Park is a new Saint Paul Park that opened in 2022. It is the second of four parks to open in the Highland Bridge Development, which is built on a former Ford Motor Plant site. Families will enjoy a dog park, nature-based playground, beach volleyball courts, fitness lot, hammock grove and space to picnic at this park. They can also explore the bedrock ravine that was built to handle stormwater. The park and the bigger development will connect to the existing community with walking and biking paths and transit. The Other Three Parks in the Development are: Uŋčí Makhá means Grandmother Earth in Dakota and is pronounced “oon-CHEE Ma-KAH”. The City of Saint Paul and Public Art Saint Paul hired Saint Paul based artists, Marlena Myles and Rory Wakemup to work as a collaborative team to create the public art at this park. The art will represent the history of the land and the stories of the Dakota people and has the working title “The Story of Creation.” According to the City ot St. Paul, the installation will include “a sculpture, murals and augmented reality components that will picture Dakota concepts and designs, and a related website on Dakota creation stories.” “Every day we walk on these lands that hold the complex histories, connections, and understandings of Dakota people … I look forward to creating new artworks that honor the significance to our homelands and pass on the teachings of Uŋčí Makhá to the future generations.” — Artist Marlena Myles.
