The two-acre Japanese Garden at Normandale Community College is open to the public daily and often hosts family-friendly events. Families can pick up a brochure from the square shelter in the garden to take a self-guided tour. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Built in the 1970s, the garden contains more than 300 plants, shrubs, and trees. Interestingly, because Minnesota’s climate is extremely cold in comparison to Japan, the garden cannot support the same plants that would be found in an actual Japanese garden. Instead, it is planted with Minnesota-hardy plants. Stylistically, Normandale’s garden employs the restrained use of flowering plants and variations in tones and textures found in traditional in Japanese gardens. The walking paths are stroller-friendly. This garden is available for rental for special events, however, it is more of a wedding venue than an appropriate birthday party venue.
