Centennial Lakes Park in Edina is a full 24 acres of outdoor family fun. At a glance, it features paved pathways that circle a collection of ponds and canals. You can ice skate on these ponds during the winter and play lawn games around them come spring. Summer hosts outdoor concerts and other family-friendly entertainment. It’s truly a family destination any date you circle on the calendar.

Summer at Centennial Lakes Park – for kids & family

The park does not have traditional playground equipment, which may disappoint some younger children. Appealing to that age is the space to move freely, a labyrinth to trace, benches that swing, maybe a paddleboat ride and the miniature model boats that often zip about the ponds. Edina Model Yacht Club hosts an annual Parade of Boats in June, glowing lighthouse nights and races into the fall. These events are free and open to the public. Additionally for kids, family-centric bands play at least once a week during the summer; pack a picnic blanket and spend the morning.

Rentals & lawn games at Centennial Lakes Park

Our older kids got excited about the outdoor games at Centennial Lakes. Here’s what you’ve got in terms of options for more organized recreation:

  • Putting course: Spring through early fall, play 18 holes of golf on a small-scale course. The putting greens range in length from 57 to 125 feet and are surrounded by obstacles such as sand traps, small ponds, boulders and planter. There is also a 9-hole Scottish links course. Suggested age to play is 8 years and up. See more about the putting course below.
  • Lawn games: Croquet and lawn bowling courts rent for $20 hour.
  • Paddleboats: Standard paddleboats can be rented (not reserved in advance) at $20/45 minutes. They seat four people.

Centennial Lakes Putting Course

Open: Seasonally; Mon-Fri: 12 pm-sunset, Sat-Sun: 10 am-sunset.
Admission: $11/18 holes, $7/9 holes.

While we feature Centennial Lakes Putting Course in our TOP MINI-GOLF COURSES IN THE TWIN CITIES, it is not considered a mini-golf course, but a putting course. They like to call it “Golf in Miniature”. It is a bit more difficult than mini-golf, but perfect for the golf enthusiast and recommended for ages 8+. (Some of the other courses on our list may be a better fit with children under 8 years old.) Putting fees have remained steady for several years. Expect to pay about $11 per person for 18 holes and $7 for the Scottish Links.

The putting course is in the southeast section of Centennial Lakes Park. The City of Edina has a map of the entire park available for printing. Follow the image below to go to the full size map.

Reservations

Reservations may be made for the putting course daily between 10am and sunset on a first-come/first-served basis. Opening dates are dependent on the weather, but usually seasonal activities open in early May.

Winter fun at Centennial Lakes Park

The frozen ponds and long canal of Centennial Lakes is our family’s favorite place in the Twin Cites to ice skate outdoors in the winter. There is no charge to skate so if you’ve got your own blades it’s a very budget outing. If you need rentals, the toasty warm Hughes Pavilion provides them at about $10/pair. Lines can get long on the weekends but once you’re laced up and ready to go, it’s a great time. The ice is lit in the evening and there’s hot chocolate at the snack bar to help you warm up after the skate. Uncertain Minnesota weather got you questioning rink conditions? Call 952-833-9586 or check the park’s social channels for an update. We urge you to check the official Centennial Lakes Park page for the most updated warming house and skate rental hours.

Birthday parties at Cenntenial Lakes – renting event space

The park offers rentals for private events in the Fireside or Parlor rooms of the Hughes Pavilion. These are available in 4-hour increments. Outside food is not permitted in the pavilion so we do not recommend a rental for a child’s party. An informal option would be to pack a picnic or purchase from nearby Whole Foods or Subway. A farmers market runs weekly from mid-June to late September; more information about this and events such as outdoor concerts and movie nights at the Maetzold Amphitheater can be found here. We also track happenings on our FAMILY FUN CALENDAR.

More park information

  • Centennial Lakes Park offers ample free parking located next to Hughes Pavilion. Even on the busiest of weekends I’ve been able to snag a spot.
  • Fishing is permitted in the ponds for those who angle.
  • Rained (or blizzarded) out? Edinborough Park is only a couple minutes’ drive away and boasts one of the biggest indoor playgrounds in the Twin Cities, Adventure Peak!
