Awards for 9 Mile Creek Trail
In 2019, the trail received an award of excellence from the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials (NACPRO) in the Trails and Corridors – Class II category. Nine Mile Creek sets an example for how a trail can be built through fully-developed communities as it connects to the Mall of America, the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Fort Snelling State Park and the Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge as well as to schools, libraries and parks. While it traverses an urban environment, use of 1.7 miles of boardwalks made it possible to create a nature-based setting through wetlands and in floodplain corridors along the creek. Potential trail gaps were remedied with three trail bridges over highways and a trail tunnel under a busy street.
In September 2019, the trail received the National Innovation in Park Design Award. This award recognizes innovative park designs and practice that have improved and strengthened their communities through design, health and wellness, conservation and social equity. Nine Mile Creek trail was chosen because of complex planning required to build a trail through multiple, fully-developed cities in a way that easily accesses transit and major employment nodes, connects with the system’s current 160-mile regional trail network and is also one of the most scenic trails in the Three Rivers system.
