Midtown Global Market is an internationally-themed public market on East Lake Street in South Minneapolis, featuring a grocery store with local produce, great food from unique restaurants, and unique gifts from cool shops. Built in the old Sears building, if you love architecture, than you will love the art deco beauty of the MGM building. It has the feel of an open street market and it is good to approach your outing with that in mind. It is fun place to visit as a family and they add the incentive weekly cultural programming. They also offer annual events, including yearly celebrations for the Lunar New Year, Holi, Juneteenth, Dia de Muertos and Kwanzaa.

Family-friendly programming at MGM

Programs may include live music, kid-friendly crafts, and cultural education, sharing a global experience of history, traditions, art, music and beliefs of our diverse Twin Cities population. While visiting for events, families can try out food from various vendors featuring foods from different countries, including sushi from Intown Sushi, interesting new vegetables from the market area, tacos from El Taco Torro or Manny’s Tortas, Caribbean food from Irie Jamaican Express, Native food from the Indigenous Food Lab Market, Morroccan food, Indian street foods, rice bowls and more. Don’t worry if you have finicky family members, you can find a standard burger and a cup of coffee, too.

Getting to Midtown Global Market

Some things to note when coming as a family. This is a busy part of town. There is a parking ramp across the street that allows for up to one hour free parking with validation. You do need to remember to ask a vendor to validate your parking ticket. There is also a lot that offers paid parking next to the mall. The traffic and parking around Midtown can both be frustrating until you’ve done it a few times. However, it is on a bus line, so if you are coming for a family fun outing, you may be able to work in a bus adventure, instead.
