Family Fun: Public Shows at Como Planetarium

To celebrate birthdays in my daughter’s kindergarten class, the birthday child simulated a walk around the sun. One orbit is tread for each year of the child’s life, while the teacher reads aloud personal milestones supplied by parents. It was a fun coincidence that the night before Emily’s birthday walk we attended one of Como Planetarium’s public programs. Right there on the domed ceiling was a visual of the planet Earth marking time by making its tireless orbit around the sun.

Orbits, constellations and galaxies were some of the interstellar subjects discussed during the first half of the kid-friendly program. We tipped comfortably back in our chairs to gaze at what the night sky looks like in both the city and the country. Right before the presentation veered into that time where young attention spans run short, the talk wrapped and the movie began.

The current public show, always held on a Tuesday evening at 5:30pm, will vary but rest assured it will be appropriate for children. A second sky show, geared towards older kids and adults, follows from 7-8pm. Como Planetarium’s schedule includes recommended ages on a show-by-show basis.
