Bruentrup Heritage Farm is an historical farm two blocks east of Maplewood Mall on County Road D. It is run by Maplewood Historical Society and is open for special events and private tours. The original homestead was established in 1891 by William Bruentrup and his wife, Ida. At one point the farm was 175 acres and incorporated the land that is now Maplewood Mall and surrounding area.
In 1997, the farm property was bought by developers; and in 1999, the city moved the old farm house and remaining farm buildings to city-owned land. The farmhouse, barn, granary, machine shed and metal foundry building were all moved. The facilities house a hundred years of farming artifacts and interactive displays. The adjacent land is prairie preserve owned by Maplewood.

Exploring Bruentrup Farm with kids
The grounds of the nature preserve and trails are open to the public to explore the 22 acres of prairie and oak savanna as well as the Victorian period rural architecture from the outside. However, the buildings and exhibits are only open for special events.
Best time to visit with kids: Besides the weekly farmer market during the summer months, favorite events and annual activities have included an apple festival, St. Nikolaustag celebration, a Halloween event and farm-to-table summer camps.
Big Red Barn Farmers Market
The popular Big Red Barn Farmers Market begins annually in June and runs through September on Sundays from 9am-1pm. Vendors sell produce, rustic arts, and handmade gifts. There are sometimes live concerts and other family-friendly entertainment. Check the events calendar to time your visit with an Exhibits open house day.
