Pack a picnic! Spring is officially here. Minneapolis’s MayDay Festival is a beloved annual tradition to celebrate the beginning of spring with a parade and all-day community festival, featuring art, community and tons of family fun. Traditionally held the first Sunday in May, the MayDay Parade is followed by a MayDay Ceremony and Festival in the park. The weather may feel like a balmy 40 degrees, but if there is ever a time to celebrate spring, we think this is the perfect event.
2026 MayDay Festival Details
The festival has three parts – the Parade, the Park Festival with the Tree of Life Ceremony, and a Block Party.

The Parade will begin at Noon and will process along Bloomington Avenue and will feature community-made floats, puppets and music. 12pm.
MayDay Park Festival & Tree of Life Ceremony

Picking up where IHOBT left off, community members are keeping the MayDay Tree of Life Ceremony alive with a community-created puppet performance. In addition, an all-day festival in the park will feature music, drum circle, and art cars. The public is invited to bring a picnic and join in the celebration. MayDay Festival History
In the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre (HOBT) began hosting the MayDay Parade and Festival in the 1970s. During the early 2020s, both HOBT and the world itself underwent immense changes. We weren’t sure if the MayDay Parade would survive these changes, but a group of community arts organizations came together to revive the parade and celebration.
Since HOBT stepped back from coordinating this popular event, other community members have been working to keep it alive. Through a grassroots community effort, MayDay was kept alive and continues the tradition again this year.
