We were sad to learn that the Cowles Center will close after March 31, 2024. The Cowles Center in downtown Minneapolis is a dance and performing arts building that offers studio spaces, education and performances. The center hosts several family-friendly events throughout the year. The Italian Cultural Center is also housed in this building. Watch for special Free family day events throughout the year. These events explore different types of dance in a family-friendly format and sometimes offer toolkits for expanded learning. Learn more and sign up for Family Day events at the center’s website. Families may be able to find dance classes at the center. James Sewell Ballet, Zenon Dance School and Minnesota Dance Theatre all have studios in the building and offer dance classes as well as performances. The Center offers Dance without Barriers residencies at local schools and student matinees to teach children about the art of dance. The matinees are active participation events that encourage kids to learn through engagement as opposed to passively watching a performance.
