Families can learn a little about Minnesota history by exploring the Alexander Ramsey House at special programs and seasonal events. Ramsey, who so many things are named after, was Minnesota’s first territorial governor. His families’ Victorian-era home is still filled with thousands of original family items and furnishings. The museum is currently open first Saturdays for guided tours and for special events throughout the year.

Visiting the Ramsey House with Kids
While MNHS used to offer regular family programs at the Ramsey House, the best current opportunities to visit are during monthly guided tours or during special events.
During tours, school-aged kids can learn what life in the 1800s was like for the wealthy Ramsey family and for their household staff. Families can discuss the differences between life then and now and what elements of each time period may be most appealing to each family member.
Older kids may be ready to explore the complex Alexander Ramsey and how 19th-century politics shaped our state as we know it today. How do we judge Victorian-era politics under a modern lens and a retrospective view of decisions made during the US-Dakota War of 1862?
The whole family can explore the architecture and artifacts of the Victorian time period during these guided tours.
Bring it Home: The Ramsey County Historical Society offers Coloring Books of the Irvine park Neighborhood Architecture, including the Alexander Ramsey House. This coloring books offers a contrast between the grandeur of the Ramsey Mansion with more simple structures. We link to the RCHS shop page at the bottom of this article. Note that we are not affiliated with RCHS or this coloring book. We just think it looks fun.
A Victorian Christmas at the Alexander Ramsey House
In this annual tradition, visitors can participate in a special holiday tour to experience a Victorian Christmas from the point of view of both the Ramseys and their servants. Participants have the chance to see original ornaments and gifts, hear traditional holiday piano music, and eat cookies baked in a wood stove.
