Pay a visit to some of Minnesota’s oldest buildings at the Sibley Historic Site and explore the early 1800s, when the post of Mendota was a major center of the region’s fur trade. Among the buildings is the home of Henry Hastings Sibley, successful fur trader and first governor of Minnesota. The site is managed by the Dakota County Historical Society, but families who have purchased a membership to the Minnesota Historical Society are admitted free.

Things to do at the Sibley Historic Site

Guided, educational tours of the historic buildings run weekends only, Memorial Day through Labor Day. These last about an hour and depart 4 times per day. Visitors are also free to explore the grounds at their own pace without paying an admission fee. Occasionally, special living history events are offered at the site. Our family has found them to be very kid-friendly with period games and crafts.

What else should I know about the Sibley Historic Site?

Pets are not allowed on the grounds, so please don’t bring your pup. If you are looking for educational materials or a unique gift, there is a shop inside one of the restored buildings that sells history-themed toys, historic reproductions, and books.

The terrain of the entire site is hilly and uneven and there is little pavement. Keep this in mind for those with mobility restrictions or those who are considering a stroller.

Mendota Days Parade

The Sibley House often has activities going on during Mendota Days, an annual festival held near the 4th of July. We have attended the community parade several times and then gone to visit the historic site. Free admission, tours and activities have taken place during the festival as a way to get the community involved.
