Gold Medal Park is a privately funded and created park adjacent to the Guthrie. Family fun activities like biking, sledding, tossing a Frisbee or yoga are encouraged and it is a good place from which to view the Mississippi River. Although it has no playground equipment, it is a beautiful, grassy place to picnic or just let the kids run a bit if you are in Downtown Minneapolis. The park’s website suggests sledding during the winter (be careful of traffic — both pedestrian and motor — though). This park connects with Central Mississippi Riverfront Regional Park and is near Stone Arch Bridge, so it can be a part of a bigger Mississippi exploration day. Being downtown and on the riverfront, there are plenty of nearby restaurants and coffee shops. The last time I visited, there was a food truck coffee shop parked nearby. I don’t know if it is always there. The highly kid-friendly Mill City Museum is also nearby.
