Sun Ray Library, located on the Greater East Side of the city, is one of the 14 branches of the St Paul Public Library (“SPPL”). All SPPL locations feature dedicated children’s areas, children’s specialists, and collections to stimulate a growing mind. The mission of SPPL is to connect people in Saint Paul with the imperative and the joy of learning through a lifetime by facilitating free access to technology, books, movies, music, classes and more. Sun Ray Library, along with the rest of the branches in the SPPL system, is fine-free as of 2019. You will, however, be billed for books 35 days past due. The charge (minus a $10 fee) will be removed if the book is returned. The library offers kids storytime in a variety of languages, a summer reading program with incentives, classes, computer space, the SPPL e-card program and many more amenities. This library was the pilot location for the Nature Smart Program, an effort to connect urban youth with nature in their neighborhoods. Since 2013 the program has grown to include additional branches of the St Paul Public Library: Hamline Midway, Riverview and Saint Anthony Park. Kids can check out Nature Smart backpacks stocked with books and activities on selected nature themes like monarchs, trees, and birds. Each of these libraries also has an outdoor space or garden where the backpacks can be used. The library installed a pollinator prairie garden and an outdoor reading garden. Play is essential in supporting storytelling, which boosts vocabulary and uses their imaginations to work out real world experiences. Sun Ray is one of the branches of the SPPL that has a children’s area dedicated to hands-on play. See our gallery above! Related Articles:
