Family-Friendly Offerings at Ramsey County Libraries:

  1. Check Out STEM Kits. STEM Kits are available to borrow and are geared toward children ages 3-7. Check them out, read about a STEM topic, and then try related experiments at home. Think of them like an alternative to those expensive monthly mail-order boxes. Subjects include: magnets, motion, buoyancy, length, weight, volume and capacity, shapes and colors, patterns, and counting and numbers. Like books, these have a 3-week loan period with renewals allowed if there is no waiting list on the item.
  2. Storytimes at Ramsey County Library. RCL offers regular Family Storytime and Baby & Me Storytime sessions, as well as special storytimes and story time guest stars. Find a complete list HERE.
  3. No Late Fees on Children’s Material. As of 2020, Ramsey County has eliminated late fees on all youth materials. There are fines for materials that are lost or not returned. However, kids can still take advantage of the Read It Down program to pay off any current fines. Kids who check in at the library can earn $1 off their fines for every 15 minutes spent reading (or being read to) in the library.
  4. Get a Free Vehicle Pass to State Parks. Check out a 7-day park vehicle pass to Minnesota State Parks at most Ramsey County branches. This program runs through June 2025.
  5. BookFlix. BookFlix is a fun app aimed at kids in early grade school, but can be adapted to use with younger kids.  Kids can read along with a couple books and then play some literacy games. Learn more here.
  6. Free Event & Museum Tickets. Find Free or reduced priced tickets to Twin Cities arts activities and museums through the SmARTpass Program. I’ve found tickets for the family to traveling museum exhibits that would have otherwise been out of our price range, music performances and plays. If your family is on the larger size, you may have to take a smaller group or have more than one family member use their library card to access tickets.
