Completed in 2018, the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail is a 15-mile trail that travels through Hopkins, Minnetonka, Edina and Richfield. It is one of the more popular Edina bike trails. The terrain of the trail features more than two miles of beautiful boardwalks, through wetlands and natural areas surrounding Nine Mile Creek. This multi-use trail is open to bikers, pedestrians and skaters year-round and is expected to attract over 400,000 visitors each year. “The vistas along the creek are spectacular, and this trail is already a jewel of the Three Rivers trail system.” — Three Rivers Park District Board Chair John Gunyou Among other attractions, the trail winds through Fred Richards Park in Edina and connects with Nokomis-Minnesota River Regional Trail, Cedar Lake LRT Regional Trail, Minnesota River Bluffs LRT Regional Trail. See our map at the bottom of this page to find all of these public parking and trail access locations: The trail runs through the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District from the LRT Regional Trail in Hopkins to Bloomington and covers approximately 15 miles. Dogs are permitted on the trail when they are leashed and picked up after by their owner. In 2019, the trail received an award of excellence from the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials (NACPRO) in the Trails and Corridors – Class II category. Nine Mile Creek sets an example for how a trail can be built through fully-developed communities as it connects to the Mall of America, the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Fort Snelling State Park and the Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge as well as to schools, libraries and parks. While it traverses an urban environment, use of 1.7 miles of boardwalks made it possible to create a nature-based setting through wetlands and in floodplain corridors along the creek. Potential trail gaps were remedied with three trail bridges over highways and a trail tunnel under a busy street. In September 2019, the trail received the National Innovation in Park Design Award. This award recognizes innovative park designs and practice that have improved and strengthened their communities through design, health and wellness, conservation and social equity. Nine Mile Creek trail was chosen because of complex planning required to build a trail through multiple, fully-developed cities in a way that easily accesses transit and major employment nodes, connects with the system’s current 160-mile regional trail network and is also one of the most scenic trails in the Three Rivers system.Related Articles
