Banning State Park in Sandstone, Minnesota, is approximately an hour and a half drive from the Twin Cities. We like it for a chance to stretch our legs on the way to Duluth. There is a beautiful waterfall to see and a nice hiking trail for families. Families with older kids may want to try canoeing or kayaking on the Kettle River.

  2. View Wolf Creek Falls. Not as tall as Minnehaha Falls, the Wolf Creek Falls is none-the-less beautiful year round.
  3. Hike the Quarry Loop. Anne included this hike among her best picks for stops when traveling to Duluth from the Twin Cities. The loop is just under two miles, so it can be a short hike for families with kids. Anne recommends using bug spray before setting out.
  4. Go Birdwatching.
  5. Camp Out. Campsites are available May 1st through mid-November.
