Lake Nokomis Park is one of three sailing lakes in the Minneapolis park system that offers many recreational opportunities. In addition to sailing, families can swim at the beach and rent watercraft such as paddleboats and stand-up paddleboards.
Fitness equipment around Lake NokomisÂ
Challenge the kids when walking around the lake. Look for exercise stations along Lake Nokomis. Scan QR codes to find a fitness app with exercises and workouts for every level.
Lake Nokomis Park playground
The new playground was completed in the summer of 2017. Among other improvements there is a new tot lot with new playground containers and equipment, more seating and permanent nature play features, including a large domed structure made from woven willow branches, called “The Thicket”.

Lake Nokomis beaches
Lake Nokomis is home to two beaches. Lifeguards will be on duty at select Minneapolis beaches beginning mid-June and running through late August. A lifeguard is on duty at Lake Nokomis Main Beach from Noon to 7:00 p.m. daily. While Lake Nokomis 50th Street Beach has lifeguards are on duty from noon to 7:00 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.
In the summer of 2023, The Painted Turtle took over concessions where Sandcastles formerly resided, selling locally sourced, made-from-scratch food choices, including ice cream, beverages, snacks and picnic foods.
Exploring Lake Nokomis Park
Learn about the history, landscape, and wetland ecosystem of the park through a walking tour created by the Minneapolis Parks Foundation. With nine stops as you walk the path around the lake, you’ll get in a 3 mile walk while learning more about the area. This self-guided tour may be best for older grade school and up. Hand your kids the tour map and let them lead the exploration.
Winter at Lake Nokomis Park
In the winter months, Lake Nokomis maintains a pond hockey rink with warming room. There are some free loaner skates available on a first come, first serve basis.
Lake Nokomis Recreation Center
The recreation center features a multi-purpose room, a gym, a craft room, a meeting room and a community kitchen. It is not air-conditioned, but it does participate in the summer meal program.

Birthday parties at Lake Nokomis Park
 Nokomis Bike Skills Park
This park is one of a handful in Minneapolis with a semi-permanent bike track. The course is built on an old tennis court, is fenced in and gives bikers a chance to practice skills on wood tracks and bumps.
Pickleball at Lake Nokomis Community Center
In 2023, MPRB added 6 new outdoor pickleball courts adjacent to the community center —Â the first dedicated pickleball courts in the Minneapolis park system. The new courts are free to use and open to all unless being used for scheduled events.
Future improvements
A new skate park was approved in the Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park Master Plan. It is on hold until funding can be maintained.
