Looking for a fun activity to do with your maturing tweens and teens? We had a chance to participate in a Lip Gloss Lab at Mix Cosmetiques and tour their shop to learn about all the services this new cosmetics shop in Downtown Minneapolis has to offer.
With locations in Superior Wisconsin and Downtown Minneapolis, Mix Cosmetiques is a locally owned cosmetics shop that creates custom, natural makeup matched to the customer’s preferences, skin tone and style. Families can register to participate in Workshops and Labs to create custom products.
My daughter and I attended the Lip Gloss Lab. This was a really fun mother-daughter afternoon outing. Family members are welcome to come and watch the process for free. Each of these experiences take approximately half an hour to an hour and you’ll walk out with a creation all your own.

Mix Cosmetiques Workshops
Lip Gloss Lab
Lip Gloss Labs are open to all ages but are best for school age children and up who can follow instructions and multiple steps. Younger kids would require more hands-on help from mom or dad. Each participant chooses and mixes their shades to create just the color they are looking for, then they can choose to add a scent and special ingredients to add properties like shiny or matte, moisturizer and sun protection. At the end you have a custom lip gloss created for your exact specifications.
Make Your Own Fragrance
If you have ever wanted your own signature scent, this guided workshop is for you. Participants explore dozens of scent notes, experiment with combinations, and create a custom fragrance unique to themselves. There are thousands of possible custom blends, so no two formulas will be the same. Go home with bottle of your custom product to use as mist perfume or a scented room spray. This program is best for tweens and teens, but no experience is necessary. Find upcoming Make Your Own Fragrance workshops.
Botanical Toner Bar
With guidance from a skincare expert and using plant-based and organic extracts, participants craft their own unique natural toner targeted toward their own specific skin type – acne, dry skin, sensitive skin, oily skin, hydration. Added to a daily skincare routine, these toners will help shrink pores, balance the skin’s pH and protect, moisturize, refresh and clean skin. Leave this class with a spray bottle of natural face toner and a deeper knowledge of the benefits of different toner ingredients.
Organic Lip Balm Making
This program is open to adults and kids of all ages and could be as fun for boys as girls. Participants will craft their own signature lip balms with natural, food-grade ingredients! Each custom mixture is created by choosing colors (natural colors or fun colors like green), scents and flavors (think peppermint, lemon, lime, citrus, vanilla, etc.). At the end of the class attendees take home four lip balm tubes with filled with their own lip balm and the basic recipe for creating your homemade lip balm in the future.
Mix Cosmetiques provides all the materials and tools you need, so there is no need to invest in products you might not use again. We like that there is a selection of high quality, natural ingredients. For instance, participants choose from a variety of food-grade flavor oils. Unlike some essential oils we may have at home, these scents and flavors are tested safe for skin and lips. Another perk of learning to make your own lip balm in this workshop, is you won’t be melting waxes over a stovetop. The shop has safe equipment for heating products prior to the mixing stage
Mineral Eyeshadow Making Workshop
The Mineral Eyeshadow Making Workshop is a guided program that walks participants through a natural makeup recipe to create a palette of their own colors. Choose from over 100 mineral pigments to create a loose eyeshadow powder or custom color palette. Participants leave with three colors and can upgrade to a fourth color. This workshop is best for pre-teens and teens.
When we were offered this opportunity, I knew my tween daughter would love this experience. To my surprise, I also loved found it exciting. While I am not as interested in mixing my own products, Mix Cosmetiques also creates custom organic products and offers instruction on how to use.
