YMCA Promotes Playing
The following is from a 2015 guest article written by Robin Hedrick, Director of Healthy Kids, YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities.
Play may be the best way to prevent childhood obesity. By putting more play into your family’s day, you will soon find your family feeling energized and strong.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese and studies show that children of obese parents are 13 times more likely to be obese as well.
It doesn’t matter what you choose to do. Just think of all the many choices there are to have fun with your kids; swimming at the YMCA, building a snowman, ice skating, sledding, shooting some hoops or taking your dog for a walk. Take your child with you to a group exercise class, yoga, bootcamp or other classes. It is important for your child to see you exercising as well. The time and attention you invest now will help your children learn, grow and thrive.
Exercising together as a family can be one of the most rewarding ways to spend time with each other. The benefits include better health and weight as well as a stronger family bond.
To get 60 minutes of moderate activity throughout your families’ day just add 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there.  Make sure the activities are fun and they will want more!
Side note from Gianna–My family had a membership for a few years when our kids were little. We first did it to make sure we got good/affordable swimming lessons. We chose the YMCA over Foss because essentially it was the same price and with a YMCA membership, Chris and I had the ability to work out and try to get our middle-aged bodies into a healthier state of being. But you don’t need a membership to a gym if you can be intentional playing together as a family.
