Imagine our excitement to find all the boxes it checks: beach, splash pad, awesome playground and a shaded picnic pavilion are beyond what we were hoping for – and there’s much more. Orono splash pad & playground
The splash pad at Orono Park is among the best we’ve experienced (and we’ve been to more than a few in our tenure at FFTC). It’s large, close enough to the playground to dart back and forth, and has cute components such as that spurting frog and a little water play table. If your kids aren’t quite up for a swim at the beach, this splash pad will more than substitute.
The playground is equally impressive with like-new equipment resembling a treehouse and it takes the extra measure to include inclusive elements along with the typical tube slides, monkey bars and ways to perfect your balancing act. To keep up with the current lingo, this play area is what you’d call a “destination playground”.
Orono Park beach
The beach at Orono Park in Elk River is long, wide, sandy, shallow and clean. There are no shade structures in place where you can easily park your beach bag and keep an eye on the kids, so take that into consideration. Also, there are no lifeguards posted at this beach so you’ll swim at your own risk. There are restrooms for changing nearby at the pavilion building.
More outdoor recreation at Orono Park
HEY TWEENS AND TEENS! If you have older kids who are interested in getting out onto the water, there is a kiosk for renting kayaks at Orono Park beach. The self-serve rentals are offered through Rent.Fun, which requires you to download their app in order to get a code that unlocks the kiosk. It’s pretty simple and keeps up with pricing compared to other area outlets (about $15).
There’s also a super tidy sand volleyball court with two nets and a spiffy skate park at Orono Park. Even if your kids aren’t into skateboards and scooters it’s fun to watch the tricks.
Reserving space at Orono Park
Interested in planning an event at Orono Park? We observed many a happy party enjoying a grad celebration or birthday bash when we visited the park. There are several options to host a gathering: the large pavilion holds 75 guests plus three additional shelters serve between 50-100 people each. Space is reserved at very reasonable rates through the city of Elk River’s parks and rec page.
