fun outdoor activities in the parks this weekend in the twin cities

Featured here for the weekend is just a taste of all that’s going on across the incredible Twin Cities park systems. You can get more ideas on our FAMILY FUN CALENDAR or browse the links below to search for local fun events & things to do with kids this weekend in the parks.

NORTH MISSISSIPPI REGIONAL PARK in Minneapolis is kind of hidden behind the I-94 freeway wall but offers great, up-close views of the Mississippi River plus a surprising amount of activities for families to enjoy. North Mississippi is the home of the CARL KROENING INTERPRETIVE CENTER and is a favorite of the FFTC children. You can read more about Joy’s take on the interpretive center exhibits at the link above.

Outdoors, the path from the interpretive center to the play area is through a beautiful prairie. There is wildlife to see if you look and places to stop and explore, including a life-size Lincoln log and nature play area. The more “standard” playground area featues a fun, splashy wading pool and space to picnic and grill. Gianna’s family had a terrific family outing at the pool & playground.

This website has info about parks like North Mississippi Regional Park

This is an ideal park to bring the bikes and take a family bike ride. It has bike trails running through it that connect with other city trails. Whether biking or walking, watch for wildlife and birds. If there’s interest, you can check out a birding backpack from the Interpretive Center if you don’t have your own birding kit. Anne’s family biked from North Mississippi Regional Park, over the Camden Avenue bridge into RIVERFRONT REGIONAL PARK in Fridley and enjoyed the close-up views of the river.
