We encourage you to verify hours on the Hennepin County Library Website

Brookdale Library is part of the Hennepin County Library System. It shares a building with a Hennepin County Service Center and Hennepin County Courts in Brooklyn Center.  While the outside of the building looks typical of a modern municipal building, the children’s section of the library is a magical place to visit with kids. Combine it with a trip to Brooklyn Center’s Centennial Park, which encompasses the library building.  Like most libraries, this branch hosts activities for both kids and adults and well as family events. Children’s Section of Brookdale Library

The children’s section features a fairy tale theme with a castle and dragons. It also features Jungle Animals Climbing, by local sculptor Christopher Tully, who also has work at Richardson Nature Center.

Explore the Art of Brookdale Library

In addition to Jungle Animals Climbing, parents can encourage their kids to look up as they enter the library and see Northern Cascade, a hanging sculpture of blue discs made by artist Ray King and installed in 2004. The artist likes to use “the natural phenomena of light as it interacts with glass and optics”. Surrounded by windows, observe how this sculpture changes depending on the type of light coming from outside. King works with math, and specifically geometry to create his sculptures. How can you duplicate this at home with your own art projects? If you need some ideas, watch this video shared by Portside Art Center in Philadelphia (King’s home town) of kid’s art inspired by Ray King’s work.
