Thompson County Park in West Saint Paul is a 50-acre park managed by Dakota County Parks. Family friendly amenities include a large play area, a large picnic area, Thompson Lake and wooded trails that connect to Kaposia Park and the Mississippi River Trail.  The trails around Thompson lake were updated in 2019.

Inclusive Playground at Thompson Park

Dakota County installed an inclusive playground as part of its recent park updates. The new playground, which opened in spring of 2022, is part of an accessible Linear Plaza that also includes picnic space and plantings. Other improvements include a new dock, benches and lighting, and new signage — both wayfinding and interpretive. Dakota county hopes these updates “will enhance access to Thompson Lake, address needs due to increased use, expand programming and activity options, highlight ongoing restoration efforts, and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act”.

Birthday Parties at Thompson County Park

The picnic shelter can be rented for $130-$150/day for birthday parties and other private events. The Dakota Lodge can also be reserved, but is priced for weddings and larger events so would probably not be practical for a child’s birthday party.

Summer Camps at Dakota County Parks

Kids between the ages of 4 and 14, can attend outdoor, sports and nature-themed summer camp at Dakota County Parks. Camps include archery, mountain biking, wilderness survival and nature themes. Find more camps like this: 2022 Twin Cities Summer Camps: Nature & Outdoor Adventure Camps.
