The Rudy Kraemer Nature Preserve is a 75-acre prairie restoration area in Burnsville. It has space for picnicking, but the real family fun is the half-mile-long, self-guided trail with eight informative stops. You can grab this trail guide (pdf) or scan the QR code at the beginning of the trail. The city of Burnsville also recommends this park as a great butterfly viewing location.

The Rudy Kraemer Nature Preserve Trail

There are eight stops on the trail. If you are carrying your cell phone, you can scan the QR at each stop to learn a little more about it. If you don’t have access to a smartphone, I recommend previewing the stops on Burnsville’s website. Many of the stops include video clips and would make a visit more fun if watched ahead (or during).

The eight stops include:

1. Get a video peek inside a chimney swift tower.
2. Watch a video of a  controlled burn of a native habitat.
3. Watch a video of a red-winged blackbird strutting his stuff.
4. Learn about the smallest flowering plant in Minnesota wetlands.
5. Learn how cattails used in World War II.
6. See a short video clip of the types of animals you might see on your walk.
7. Watch a video of an eastern bluebird and hear its call.
8. Learn what the word tamarack means.

Winter at Rudy Kraemer Nature Preserve

In winter months enjoy the trail by snowshoeing or hiking.
